FRIENDSHIP FORCE TBILISI - GEORGIA
Impressions
We drove to Batumi, stopping in Bakuriani along the way. Unfortunately, the rain had washed out some of the roads so we were not able to explore the area as much as we would have liked. I did notice that there are many new condos or hotels being built in the area which should be ready for the upcoming ski season. Batumi is a seaside city which seems to be transforming into a butterfly. There are contrasts in this city as well, pine trees to palm trees, older Georgian buildings beside 21st century modern buildings. There was lots of water/sewer and road construction. When building is completed, Batumi will be a beautiful, modern seaside city. There is now a flight from Tbilisi which will make Batumi easily accessible. Tusheti is a hidden gem in Georgia. After a long eight-hour drive from Tbilisi over a narrow, bumpy, mountainous road through the Abano Pass, we arrived on a plain near the village of Omalo. It was so beautiful that it brought tears to my eyes. The picturesque mountain slopes, covered in wildflowers, rising to beautiful peaks, simply took my breath away. We also visited the villages of Shenako, Diklo, and Dartlo. We were invited to a shepherd’s camp in the mountains where they patiently explained the process of making cheese from sheep’s milk. Unfortunately, we had to leave the next day as the rain started and the roads on the Abano Pass became treacherous. We flew to Svaneti with Kenn Borek Air Ltd. from Calgary, Alta., Canada. They have a contract with the Georgian government to fly to Mestia. Mestia is a town in a beautiful valley surrounded by majestic mountains. Svan towers dot the landscape. They were built many centuries ago as defensive structures. Mestia has many abandoned buildings, especially from the time of the Soviet period. President Saakashvili has initiated a revitalization of this area. In fact, he is building a home here for himself. Many new hotels are being built (or are recently built) in this area which is great for hiking in the summer and skiing in the winter. Georgia seems to be getting ready for an influx of tourists. They have plenty of new hotels and roads being built, as well as plenty of maps and information in both English and Georgian. I found more English speaking people than I expected. I learned that English, German and French are being taught in their schools. I felt very safe in Georgia as I noticed a large police presence. I enjoyed my stay in Georgia. Would I come again? Absolutely! We flew to Svaneti with Kenn Borek Air Ltd. from Calgary, Alta., Canada. They have a contract with the Georgian government to fly to Mestia.
