FRIENDSHIP FORCE TBILISI - GEORGIA
Project "HOPE" A program of inclusive education for children with special needs Dear Friends, I would like to tell you about project "HOPE", an outgrowth of the creative association "Buma". "HOPE" is a program that seeks to educate children with "special needs" in a manner that maximizes their inclusion in mainstream education. Unfortunately, people in Georgia don't recognize the problems of special needs children, and the importance of keeping these children at home and incorporating them into the educational process. As a result, these children remain marginalized and fail to develop their capabilities to the fullest extent possible. Many studies have shown that including special needs children in normal classes not only benefits the children with special needs but also the normal children. This is because inclusive programs enable regular children to recognize the problems of others and become more tolerant and empathetic. And, while the regular children learn to understand the special needs of their friends, they also come to see that they have much in common with these children. All over the world, in both developed and undeveloped countries, inclusive education programs exist. It is imperative that Georgia approves inclusive education programs that reach all children with special needs and that the rights of these children are defended. Unfortunately, the few programs that exist are fragmentary in nature and do not address the deeper needs of the children. Social programs funded by the government are also needed. International experience tells us that if we use our resource's carefully and take advantage of the technical knowledge that currently exists, we can be successful. The program we call "HOPE" was created in Tbilisi, Georgia to meet the needs of special children. Our goal is to create a system which enables these children to be socially rehabilitated and where they can develop their talents. Our program goals aim to: 1) Develop an informed public by: a) putting articles in the press about the rights of all children, both normal and disabled. b) providing teachers, pupils, and parents with information about the need to defend the rights of children in general 2) Formulate a program of inclusiveness by: a) planning how to return disabled children to their families b) formulating a program of de-institutionalization if no family is available 3) Show the capabilities of special needs children by: a) creating a pilot Kindergarten and primary school program b) training teachers in the theory and practice of inclusivity by creating a new specialization c) developing a multi-disciplined team to observe and help the group d) putting on plays and exhibitions by special needs children Project HOPE has been working hard on behalf of these special needs children for the past three years but we cannot achieve our goals alone. With your help, we can create a program in the Republic of Georgia like the ones you have come to expect in your country. Please help us be successful. Your assistance is greatly appreciated and will go directly to care for these worthy children with special needs.
